1989 SMU Mustangs football team
The 1989 Southern Methodist University Mustangs football team represented the Southern Methodist University in the 1989 college football season. It was the first season played by the Mustangs after serving the death penalty. The Mustangs offense scored 187 points while the defense allowed 499 points. In a game versus the Houston Cougars on October 21, the Mustangs allowed 95 points.
Regular season
- In the Battle for the Iron Skillet, Texas Christian beat SMU by a score of 28-10.
- In the Mayor’s Cup, Rice beat SMU by a score of 35-6.
